TAAO 2024: Welcome to Beijing
Prof. Dr. Zhihong Li, Chair of TAAO 2024
We are very pleased to announce the Second Symposium of Tephritid Workers of Asia, Australia, and Oceania (TAAO) that will be held from May 6th -10th, 2024 in Beijing, China. The theme of TAAO 2024 is “Management of Tephritid Fruit Flies in Current Globalization Era”. The TAAO was established as an independent professional and scientific organization with the purpose of bringing together Tephritid workers from Asia, Australia, and Oceania in managing pest fruit flies. The first symposium of TAAO was successfully held in 2016 in Malaysia.
To develop better fruit fly management tactics in current Globalization Era, the tephritid workers all over the world should come together to enhance existing communication and collaboration. This also marks a new phase in TAAO towards efforts in increasing regional involvement and participation in the study and management of fruit flies throughout this region.
TAAO 2024 will consist of 8 exciting sessions including Survey and Monitoring, Risk Assessment, Management and Communication, Species Complex and Species Diagnosis, Population Tracing and Invasive Pathway, Phytosanitary Treatment and Eradication, Area-wide management and SIT, and Global Change and Invasion Mechanism. A workshop on quantitative risk assessment and molecular identification of Tephritids will also be held before the symposium. After the symposium has concluded, a local trip visiting Beijing’s surroundings will be provided to the participants.
As organizers, it will be our responsibility, as we give our best in arranging for this important symposium. We wish to thank the TAAO Steering Committee, Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and the International Atomic Energy Agency, China Agricultural University, Beijing Entomology Society, and Guangzhou Ruifeng Biotechnology Co., Ltd etc. for the support all this while.
Thus, on behalf of the Organizing Committee, we warmly welcome you all to Beijing to participate in this important gathering of fruit fly workers.
“北京欢迎您!”
Welcome to Beijing!
Tephritid fruit flies are among the world’s most destructive horticultural pests, infesting a wide range of fruit and impacting on regional quarantine, trade, and food security. They are also an incredibly diverse group of insects and the subject of fundamental research into biodiversity, evolution, and general biology.
The Asian, Australian, and Oceanic region is a centre of tephritid diversity, particularly of genus Bactrocera which contains over 500 species; and regional horticulture is seriously affected by pests such as the Oriental fruit fly (B. dorsalis), the Melon fly (Zeugodacus cucurbitae), and the Guava fruit fly (B. correcta) to name just a few.
About TAAO
The Tephritid workers of Asia, Australia, and Oceania (TAAO) was established as an independent professional and scientific organization with the purpose of bringing together tephritid workers from across the region. TAAO specifically aims to:
Broaden interaction and collaboration among tephritid workers from the region
Enhance capacity to develop and deploy effective diagnostic and management programmes
Provide a centralised forum for researchers, agencies, and regulators to access and obtain specific information or to contact regional tephritid workers
Foster collegiality among tephritid workers in the region
Educate the wider community about the biological importance of tephritids and their impact on regional horticulture.
Regular conferences are planned, with the First Symposium of TAAO (TAAO 2016) held from August 15-18, 2016, in Putrajaya, Malaysia.
